Confidence in Every Calorie: The Syndigo Nutrition Database Difference
Nutrition Database

It feels like nutrition information on food items is available everywhere, but that doesn’t mean it’s always complete – or correct. With countless apps and databases crowd-sourcing nutrition data or relying on unproven sources of information, it’s easy for consumers (and businesses) to receive wrong information. That’s why a track record of proven accuracy, transparency, and trust is more important than ever.

One reason Syndigo’s Nutritionix Nutrition Database, a Syndigo Nutrition & Wellness solution, uniquely stands apart from alternatives is that it’s maintained and verified by an in-house team of Registered Dietitians who are focused on making sure that every data point meets the highest standards of precision.

Built-in Quality Assurance Management

Quality Assurance Management

Syndigo’s credentialed registered dietitians understand the science behind the numbers. They’re more than volunteers or crowd-sourced contributors that many other nutrition databases rely on—they’re trained professionals who understand nutrient profiles, food labeling regulations, and dietary patterns. This expertise ensures more accurate, real-time nutritional data.

Here’s how they do it!

Icon

Ongoing Audits of CPG and Restaurant Data

In Syndigo’s databases, information isn’t entered once and then forgotten. Our dietitians regularly audit and update the database to reflect changes in consumer packaged goods (CPGs) and restaurant menu items. CPG foods are captured, verified, and added to the database within 72 hours of entering the market, which means 10,000-15,000 additions and updates per month. Whether it’s new products being released or special menu items being added, the team is constantly reviewing to ensure users always have the most up-to-date information available.

Icon

Aligned with USDA and Regulatory Guidelines

Governmental food and nutrition policies are constantly evolving. Updates from the USDA, FDA, and other relevant regulatory bodies are closely monitored. From changes in Recommended Daily Values to emerging labeling laws, they proactively adapt the database to meet new standards so database users don’t have to worry about identifying outdated or inaccurate information.

Restaurant Data
Icon

Dual Coding for Accuracy

Each food entry goes through a dual coding process in which two coders carefully transcribe nutrition data. If there are any differences between the two entries, a specially trained coder reviews and finalizes the data. This process not only helps eliminate human error but also identifies errors that can be introduced by image-to-text software.

Icon

Not Crowd-Sourced. Always Verified.

Unlike many consumer-focused nutrition apps and databases, Syndigo doesn’t rely on user-generated nutritional content. This means you won’t find duplicate entries, typos, or wildly inaccurate listings. All data is meticulously sourced and verified, ensuring every gram, serving size, and calorie count is trustworthy.

Icon

Built-In Algorithms to Flag Nutritional Impossibilities.

Proprietary algorithms also help to flag data inconsistencies or nutritional impossibilities—like a food claiming to have zero calories but listing 10g of fat. These internal checks act as another layer of protection that helps catch and correct errors before they ever reach the user.

Nutrition Intelligence

Nutrition Intelligence: Accurate Data When It Matters Most

Nutrition is a dynamic industry, and Syndigo’s Nutritionix Nutrition Database is always up to date to meet the latest regulatory requirements and nutrition information demands by organizations and users. Nutritional data isn’t just about numbers—it’s the foundation of how people eat, live, and make informed decisions. With experienced registered dietitians at the helm, continuous audits, regulatory alignment, and robust quality control systems, Syndigo delivers what others can’t: confidence in every calorie.

SUCCESS STORY

Glooko Nutrition Logging Rate Thrives with Nutritionix Nutrition Database

Nutrition

Glooko is a leading global digital health platform that empowers individuals with diabetes to manage their health more effectively. It integrates data from a wide range of health devices, including glucose meters, insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), fitness trackers, and health apps—providing users with up-to-date information and personalized insights.

Deployed in over 30 countries and 10,000+ clinical locations, Glooko’s goal is to transform diabetes care by connecting people living with diabetes and their healthcare providers— equipping them with timely, actionable information to inform care. This information has the potential to enable improved outcomes, increase access, improve satisfaction, and reduce healthcare costs.

Nutrition Database

Managing food and nutrition is crucial for people with diabetes, but historically people had to rely on inefficient manual tracking methods that often provided incomplete or inaccurate nutritional information to both patients and healthcare providers. Recognizing these challenges, Glooko developed a tracking feature that combines user-friendly meal logging with reliable nutritional information to empower users to make more informed decisions about their diet and better manage their health condition.

Since using the Nutritionix Nutrition Database, a Syndigo Nutrition & Wellness solution, Glooko has seen a significant improvement in customer engagement with their logging feature, including:

 • Increased food logging frequency
 • Expanded global food logging
 • Customer praise of food variety
 • Increased user engagement time with the app

Overcoming the Complexities of Food Tracking

The company sought to develop a comprehensive solution that would streamline meal tracking while providing reliable nutritional data. With an expanding global presence, Glooko also needed a platform capable of supporting multiple languages and diverse regional food databases to serve its international user base effectively.

When searching for a robust food database, the Nutritionix Nutrition Database stood out as the best fit to ensure we met our objectives when it came to food logging. We needed more than just a robust tool. We required a partner capable of delivering highly accurate, localized nutritional data with multi-language support to meet the diverse needs of our global users. Nutritionix exceeded our expectations, significantly enhancing user engagement and empowering our customers with precise, relevant nutritional insights tailored specifically to their needs. With Nutritionix, we’ve seen significant improvements in food logging frequency, greater international adoption, increased app engagement, and enthusiastic customer feedback about the variety and accuracy of the nutritional information provided.

Cameron Trotter
Director of Product Marketing at Glooko

Modernizing Nutrition Data Tracking

After extensive evaluation, Glooko selected the Nutritionix Nutrition Database based on its distinction as the world’s largest dietitian-verified database. It serves as the nutritional “source of truth” for a vast array of restaurant items and common store-bought foods, ensuring that the data aligns with industry standards. The level of diligence in verifying the accuracy of the database gave them the confidence they needed in a reliable partner.

They were also impressed with Nutritionix’s focus on making food logging simple and intuitive, which was crucial because tracking meals is often one of the biggest hurdles for people with diabetes. Their Natural Language Processing feature allows users to log meals just by speaking into the app. Then the database intelligently parses the input and provides a detailed, itemized breakdown of the meal. Additionally, the barcode scanning feature enables users to instantly access nutritional information simply by scanning a product’s barcode, making the logging process quick and effortless.

Positive Consumer Engagement Impact

The successful integration with the Nutritionix Nutrition Database has transformed how users interact with their food logging capabilities. This strategic partnership has enhanced Glooko’s ability to provide comprehensive nutritional tracking while simplifying the user experience for diabetes management worldwide. They have seen significant improvements in two key areas:

1. Increased food logging frequency: One of their main goals was to encourage users to log their meals more consistently, and thanks to the ease of adding foods and the comprehensive nature of the database they’ve seen a noticeable increase in the number of food items logged per user. The seamless meal entry process, combined with the accuracy of the nutritional information provided, has made it much easier for users to engage with the platform regularly.

2. Expanded global food logging: With Nutritionix’s ability to support multiple languages and provide localized food options, they’ve also observed a rise in the number of users logging foods in regions where Glooko has recently expanded. This has allowed them to better serve their global user base by offering nutritional insights tailored to customers’ local cuisine and language, driving higher engagement and satisfaction in new markets.

Nutrition Data Tracking

Praise from Customers and Health Providers

One of the biggest drivers of positive app store reviews has been users praising their robust food database since using the Nutritionix Nutrition Database.

While food logging is just one of many features Glooko offers, it stands out as the one that both patients and providers frequently highlight for its ease of use and accuracy. The quality of their food logging experience plays a key role in not only retaining existing users but also attracting new ones, as it provides a tangible value that sets them apart from other platforms.

Nutritionix and Health Management Advantages

Glooko

Glooko’s primary goal is to provide users with a reliable, high-quality food database that empowers them to make informed decisions about their nutrition and, ultimately, their treatment. By offering accurate nutritional information, users can better understand how their food choices impact their condition, allowing them to manage their health more effectively. Nutritionix plays a crucial role in helping them achieve this by offering a comprehensive, dietitian-verified database that users can trust. Its ease of use and robust data ensure that users have access to the right information at the right time to support their health decisions.

Moving Forward: Food Analytics Innovation

Glooko plans to expand beyond basic nutrition tracking with advanced food analysis tools and personalized nutrition insights to provide real-time feedback on how specific food choices impact personal health, especially with diabetes management. With the Nutritionix database as its foundation, they want to further personalize nutrition insights, enabling users to understand the direct effects of their food choices on their condition. This data-driven approach will empower patients to make timely, smarter, and more informed decisions about their health.

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) menu labeling regulations were designed to help consumers make more informed food choices when dining out. These regulations are not just about compliance—they’re about empowering your customers with nutrition transparency so they can make informed decisions that align with their dietary needs and wellness goals. Transparency leads to trust that can help build repeat business.

Since these menu labeling rules took effect in 2018, grocery retailers, restaurants, fast food chains, coffee shops, and other retail food establishments have needed to understand, implement, and stay current with these requirements.

Here’s what you need to know to stay up to date and compliant.

Track the Latest FDA Menu Labeling Regulations

FDAs menu

The FDA’s menu labeling regulations require covered establishments to provide clear and accurate nutritional information for standard menu items. Calories must be listed on menus and menu boards for standard items. Additionally, nutrients such as total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, sugars, protein, key vitamins (A and C), and minerals (calcium and iron) must be available upon request.

For more detailed FDA menu labeling guidance, you can refer to these resources:

Do These Regulations Apply to Your Business?

The FDA’s menu labeling regulations primarily apply to establishments with 20 or more locations that serve standardized food items. This includes:

 • Chain restaurants
 • Fast food chains
 • Coffee shops
 • Convenience stores with prepared foods
 • Grocery retailers with prepared foods
 • Movie theaters offering food items.
Foods Labeling

Local Regulations

It’s important to note that smaller businesses with fewer than 20 locations, food trucks, and third-party ordering apps are not required to comply with these federal regulations but may need to meet state and local requirements.

FDA Menu Compliance

Tips to Achieve Compliance

Though complying with menu labeling regulations can seem challenging, ensuring your business meets them while providing valuable information to your customers is well worth the effort. From properly displaying calories to making nutritional data accessible, these five compliance areas will help you build trust with health-conscious customers and enhance their dining experience.

1. Display Calorie Information on Menus and Menu Boards

As a first step, ensure that calorie counts are clearly displayed on menus and menu boards. The calorie information must be legible and placed close to the name or price of the menu item.

Helpful Tip

Review all your menu items and ensure that calorie information is displayed next to each item on your menus and menu boards. If you have digital menu boards, ensure the font size and contrast meet the legibility requirement.

2. Be Ready to Provide Additional Nutritional Information

In addition to calories, consumers must have access to other nutritional information such as fat content, sodium, carbohydrates, and key vitamins and minerals. This information must be made available upon request.

Helpful Tips

 • Prepare nutritional fact sheets or pamphlets that you can hand out upon request.
 • Alternatively, provide the information digitally via your website or QR codes available in the restaurant. This will make it easier for customers to access the nutritional data.

3. Add Required Statements to Your Menus

The FDA requires two key statements on menus:

 • Statement 1: Indicate that detailed nutritional information is available upon request.
 • Statement 2: Include a statement clarifying that “2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice, but calorie needs vary.”

Helpful Tip

Review your menus to ensure both statements are present and appropriately displayed.

4. Label Alcoholic Beverages When Necessary

If you provide alcoholic beverages, calorie information must be displayed for pre-mixed, standard drinks. However, this does not apply to drinks made on demand or customized beverages.

Helpful Tip

Ensure that all alcoholic beverages listed on your menu meet the labeling requirements. This includes drinks like pre-mixed cocktails and packaged beverages.

5. Self-Service Foods Labeling

If you offer buffets, salad bars, or self-service food areas, calorie information must be displayed at the point of service. Additionally, grab and go foods should either have calorie information directly on the package or displayed on signage.

Helpful Tip

Place clear signage with calorie information for all food items at the buffet, salad bar, or grab and go area. Ensure the signage is large enough to be easily readable by customers.

Nutritional Information

Navigating FDA Menu Compliance Standards

Staying compliant with the latest FDA menu labeling regulations is important for ensuring nutritional transparency and building customer trust. By clearly displaying calorie counts, providing additional nutritional information upon request, and following labeling requirements for menus, you can meet regulatory standards with confidence.

Regularly reviewing FDA guidelines and using trusted nutrition data solutions not only keeps you compliant but also enhances the dining experience for your customers by empowering them to satisfy their unique dietary requirements and overall wellness goals.

Ultra-Processed Food Health Concerns Fuel Regulatory Activity https://syndigo.com/fr/blog/ultra-processed-food-and-regulatory-activity/ Wed, 05 Feb 2025 17:26:00 +0000 https://syndigo.com/?p=67940 Learn about the latest regulatory activity on ultra-processed foods and the FDA ban on Red No. 3 from the Syndigo Nutrition and Wellness team of registered dietitians.

The post Ultra-Processed Food Health Concerns Fuel Regulatory Activity appeared first on Syndigo.

]]>
The health effects of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have returned to the spotlight following California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent Executive Order. The order directs several state agencies to investigate these widely consumed products and propose measures to mitigate their potential health risks. Any resulting recommendations could force manufacturers to overhaul their product formulations for the California market, one of the largest in the US.

So, what are UPFs?

Ultra-processed foods are typically a formulation of ingredients that involve numerous processes that break down foods from their whole form. Generally, fats, oils, sugars, and sodium are added to these types of foods along with additives that prolong shelf life or improve palatability. UPFs can be less expensive for consumers, which has led to an uptick in the consumption of these products. They have been shown to typically be higher in saturated fats, added sugars, and salt, while lacking sufficient fiber, protein, and vitamins and minerals. According to this Healthline article, consuming ultra-processed foods regularly increases a person’s risk of health complications including cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. It’s important to keep in mind that almost all of our food is processed to some extent, but some are more processed than others.

ultra-processed foods

What does the Executive Order require?

Select state agencies have been directed to provide recommendations about ultra-processed food that include:

 • Limiting the harms associated with ultra-processed foods and food ingredients that pose a health risk to individuals.
 • Actions to reduce the purchase of soda, candy, other ultra-processed foods and/or foods with synthetic food dye or other additives.
Wellness solutions

Synthetic Food Dyes and Red No. 3

Also required in the Executive Order is the continued investigation into the adverse health impacts of synthetic food dyes. California passed the California Food Safety Act in 2024 that prohibits certain food additives from being sold, manufactured, or distributed in the state, including Red No. 3. And in a recent action, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide ban on using Red No. 3 in food and drinks starting in January 2027. This means US manufacturers must modify their product formulations and remove it from their labels. The rule also applies to foods imported into the US. It’s already banned in food use in the European Union, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

wellness

The Future of Food Additives Regulation

Depending on the final recommendations requested in the Executive Order, food and drink manufacturers may need to alter their products to comply with new standards. Changes will not only impact California, the largest state by population in the country, but likely the entire country. Historically, businesses tend to adjust their products to meet California’s stricter regulatory standards and make these available across the country, rather than change a product for just one state, which is inefficient and costly for manufacturers. For consumers, impacts may be seen in grocery stores and at the point of sale, depending on the proposed ways to help reduce purchases of these products.

With mounting evidence linking ultra-processed foods to children’s health issues, obesity, and other health concerns, regulatory bodies are increasingly scrutinizing the use of additives in ultra-processed foods. California’s initiative likely signals a broader shift toward stricter oversight, putting food manufacturers on notice to expect more state and federal restrictions.

The food we eat shouldn’t make us sick with disease or lead to lifelong consequences. California has been a leader for years in creating healthy and delicious school meals and removing harmful ingredients and chemicals from food. We’re going to work with the industry, consumers, and experts to crack down on ultra-processed foods and create a healthier future for every Californian.

New Year’s resolutions often focus on health and wellness goals like better nutrition and weight loss. While changing behaviors is hard, overall wellness is crucial for you and your family’s long-term health. Don’t let January’s motivation fade — instead, build lasting habits for year-round success. Our Registered Dietitians on the Syndigo Nutrition and Wellness solutions team created these helpful tips to guide your nutrition journey in 2025.*

1. Prioritize Plant-Based Proteins

The trend towards plant-based proteins continues to grow as new health benefits of limiting our consumption of animal proteins are reported. The good news? You don’t need to go fully vegetarian or vegan to get the benefits of a plant-based diet. Just focus on adding foods like beans and legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, and vegetables to your meal while decreasing animal protein portions for a more plant-forward experience. You can also participate in Meatless Mondays for a full day of plant-based eating. Small changes can help you reap the many benefits of a plant-based diet, including improved heart health and lowering your risk for chronic diseases.

diet

2. Eat Mindfully

You may have heard about the growing movement towards intuitive eating, which can be a great addition to your wellness goals this year. This practice encourages you to slow down, savor your food, and be more present at mealtimes. By doing this, you can listen to your body’s needs and hunger cues to prevent overeating and improve digestion.

3. Focus on Balance

Add a variety of foods to your diet by incorporating vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains in your meals. Consuming a balanced diet with more whole foods and less prepackaged snacks or highly processed items can help you get more of the nutrients you need like fiber, vitamins, and minerals to support your health. Remember, while a healthy diet is important, enjoying your food and spending time with people around a meal is valuable for balance as well.

Nutrition

4. Stay Hydrated

Keeping our bodies hydrated can often be overlooked. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and other symptoms. The feeling of thirst can also be mistaken for hunger, so be sure you are incorporating a lot of fluids into your diet. Aim for at least 8 cups of water daily, but more than that if you’re active. Consuming water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and celery can also help you stay on track with hydration too!

5. Add More Fiber

It is recommended that we consume between 25-35g of fiber daily, however most people don’t meet this goal. Fiber is a type of indigestible carbohydrate that is mostly found in plant sources. There are both soluble fibers in foods like nuts, beans, and chia seeds, and insoluble fibers in whole grains, leafy greens, and fruits with edible skins such as apples. It’s important to get both types of fiber in your diet for maximum health benefits. Fiber has been shown to help lower cholesterol to keep our hearts healthy, aid in controlling blood glucose levels, promote a healthy digestive system, and keep us fuller for longer periods of time to help prevent overeating.

Wellness Tips

6. Stay Active

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. Being active can be just as important to your health as the foods you eat. While you may love to hit the gym or take an exercise class, we know that these might not fit your lifestyle. Find other ways to move your body instead. Perhaps go for a walk during your lunch break, take the stairs, enjoy a trip to the park— the list is endless! Regular exercise and movement are known to boost your mood, support weight management, and strengthen muscles.

7. Manage Stress

Nutrition and exercise goals are always popular New Year’s resolutions, but don’t forget about other areas of your health like stress management. Chronic stress can lead to poor mental health, overeating, and physical health problems. It can be difficult to manage stress when we are always busy with work and family responsibilities. Try incorporating brief moments in your day to practice yoga, meditate, listen to relaxing music, or even take some deep breaths. Exercising like we mentioned in the previous tip can also help you unwind and manage stress too.

Nutrition

8. Plan and Prep for Success

Meal planning and prepping ahead can go a long way towards setting yourself up for success in your health and wellness goals. Meal prepping doesn’t need to be super complicated or time consuming either. Set aside a few minutes each week to make a meal plan, food shop for the week, and prep what you can. Focus on simple prepping like cutting up all the fruits and vegetables ahead of time so it is ready when you’re starting to cook. You can also batch cook grains like rice or quinoa in advance for easy reheating later in the week.

9. Reduce Certain Nutrients

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming less saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium in our diets as they can contribute to poor health outcomes. Saturated fats are primarily found in animal-based foods like meats and dairy — so all the more reason to incorporate our first tip of more plant-based proteins. For example, added sugars are sugars added to foods during processing, like syrups and sweeteners, and do not include naturally occurring sugars present in fruits, vegetables, and milk. Sodium is typically found in processed or packaged foods and should be limited to about 2,300 mg per day. Also try to reduce your intake of sweetened beverages, processed snacks, and meats to support your long-term health.

Nutrition

10. Be Realistic

You might be super motivated this year to change some habits and follow some of these tips, but it’s also important to set realistic goals that are specific and attainable for you to maintain throughout the year. Don’t set vague goals like “eat healthier.” Instead, set actionable steps that you can work towards. Use our tips and adjust them to create your personal goals. For example, if you want to consume more plant proteins, perhaps your goal is “consume a plant-based meal 3 times per week.” Making a list of achievable goals will help you feel confident and stick to them.

On May 20, 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration introduced the updated Nutrition Facts Label on packaged foods and beverages, with a fresh design after almost two decades.

At first glance, the new label may not seem too different, but upon a closer look, it reflects more helpful nutritional information. Not only does the new label realistically showcase the way we eat today, it allows consumers to make more informed decisions.

The updated label features:

 • a refreshed design
 • updated information about nutrition science including the link between diet and chronic diseases
 • updates to serving sizes and labeling requirements for certain package sizes

The FDA’s extended compliance dates for the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts are now upon us:

 • January 1, 2020 – Manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales
 • January 1, 2021- Manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales
A Review: What’s New?

The new labels have a greater focus on calories and serving size, new information indicating how much sugar is added, as well as an increased focus on nutrients that many Americans need more of.

 1. Servings: Servings per container and serving size are in a larger and bolder type. Serving sizes have also been updated to reflect what people eat and drink today.
 2. Calories: Calories are now in larger and bolder type.
 3. Use % Daily Value as a Guide: The Daily Values for nutrients have been updated based on new scientific evidence. The Daily Values are reference amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceed each day (for adults and children 4 year of age and older) and are used to calculate the % Daily Value.
 4. Choose Nutrients Wisely: The nutrients that are required on the label have been updated. Added Sugars, Vitamin D, and potassium are now required on the label.
 5. Check out the Ingredient List: Even though the ingredient list is not part of the Nutrition Facts label, it is also a helpful tool. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so the ingredient that weighs the most is listed first, and the ingredient that weighs the least is listed last.
Power Your Product Content Transparency and Supply Chain Efficiency

Some of the risks tied to non-compliant labeling include supply chain disruption, product recalls, penalties, and damaged brand reputation. Food and beverage companies that want to get ahead of these latest regulations need to start implementing as much of the new guidance as possible since the cost will only increase as the deadlines approach.

The amount of time and effort to prepare for compliance is often underestimated. Now is a great time to evaluate whether your product content is optimized.

Luckily, the Syndigo platform saves our clients time and resources by integrating all product content management in a single place, which simplifies any existing manual processes such as combining data sources from independent locations.

Our core content helps retailers provide more detailed, transparent nutritional information that consumers know and love well ahead of the deadline.

With the vast amount of information available, they are looking for deeper health & wellness information that goes beyond the label.

Today’s shoppers are focusing on a comprehensive approach to wellness, and healthy food choices as a variable in that equation are growing in importance. In addition to the information already available, shoppers are looking for deeper nutritional information that goes beyond what’s provided on the product label.

With Syndigo’s comprehensive wellness features now available on Syndigo Platform, both brands and retailers can use wellness claims to deliver on their shoppers’ demand for deeper health and wellness insights. Syndigo’s wellness capabilities are powered by machine learning, data science and a team of registered dietitians in order to provide effective tools for processing nutrition facts, ingredient statements, and on-pack claims to audit and match products to more than 75 health and wellness claims.

3 Ways Retailers Can Use Health & Wellness Claims to Drive Their Business

Here are three ways that retailers can use Syndigo’s wellness capabilities to benefit their business:

1. Personalize the customer experience — Retailers can power greater consumer connections using enhanced wellness attributes. Shoppers today are looking to get more specific in understanding what is in the food they buy. By leveraging an omni-commerce strategy to personalize shopper interactions in-store, online across any device, and throughout all marketing efforts, retailers can drive sales by delivering transparency into deeper wellness attributes. For example, personalizing product discovery by recommending products online that fit a shopper’s specified wellness preferences can tie to in-store shelf tags highlighting healthy products. This type of personalization also drives loyalty – as many as one in three shoppers will switch online retail vendors when personalized offers were made.

2. Leverage wellness insights to focus resources — Retailer margins are always tight. It is sometimes difficult to choose where to focus resources to make the most impact. By using Syndigo’s wellness capabilities, you can understand your overall product catalog and where to invest in more popular wellness items. By leveraging these catalog insights, you focus your resources and systematically enrich your product content where most beneficial.

3. Increase basket size and loyalty to drive sales — When your shopper uses nutrition-based filters in planning their trip, the average basket size increases by 11%. Sales of foods in special diet categories have grown by more than 50% since 2014*, and retailers can tap into this demand by giving shoppers the nutrition filters and sorting capabilities they seek. With Syndigo wellness attributes, you can meet the shopper’s need online and in real time.

There are many additional ways that using wellness attributes can help retailers as well; for example, identifying the percentages of product assortment that meets certain wellness claims to adjust product mix; using shelf tags in store to call out wellness attributes on the shelf; or by promoting products with wellness characteristics in weekly circulars or in store.

3 Ways Brands Can Use Health & Wellness Claims to Drive Their Business

Here are three ways that brands can use Syndigo’s wellness capabilities to benefit their business:

1. Audit your claims to drive shopper personalization — By using enhanced wellness attributes, brands can power greater consumer connections. Shoppers today are looking to get more specific with what is in the food they buy: Sales of foods in special diet have grown by more than 50% since 2014*, and average basket size increases by as much as 11% when shoppers use nutrition-based filters and sorting. With Syndigo’s wellness features, brands can audit their existing product claims to find any potential gaps with shopper needs and dietary trends including gluten-free, paleo, ketogenic, and plant based (vegan/vegetarian).

2. Incorporate attributes to provide product transparency —As shopper interests and buying habits change, it’s helpful to have an active feedback loop between item sales and wellness data. Syndigo makes it easy to audit and research reliable wellness data, which can help save time and provide better transparency into product content. For example, brands with access to deep analytical information can ensure clarity beyond the label for their shoppers, while adapting efficiently to evolving trends to highlight desired wellness traits beyond the label.

3. Share product sets to build better partner relationships —One place often overlooked, but still important for brands to leverage wellness capabilities is outside of eCommerce – in Category Management. When brands meet with retailer category managers, being able to show the items that have specific wellness characteristics can be an excellent lead-in to collaborative merchandising discussions to drive greater engagement in-store as well as online.

There are many additional ways that using wellness attributes can help brands as well; for example, brands can audit to see which products qualify for specific filters and categories available on Retailer sites; meet added demand for transparency by using SmartLabel™ online capabilities; and offer additional products that can help round out a retailer category.

Using Wellness Claims to Convert More Shoppers

Healthy food has always been important for shoppers, and consumers today are looking at what they eat as part of their overall “wellness”, not just dietary health. Consider that into the 1990s the main eating concerns for consumers were weight and heart health. Today, especially with Millennial and Gen Z shoppers, this has grown into concerns around digestive health, nutrient density, diabetes, and concepts such as “purity” and “energy”. *

This new perspective on food as a core to overall health and wellness provides an opportunity for retailers and brands to showcase their products by highlighting the attributes shoppers seek. According to user statistics from Nutritionix, in addition to calorie counting some of the top attributes include Low Carb, High Protein, Vegetarian and Ketogenic Diet. **

There is a challenge with these expanding search terms, however. Many of today’s wellness claims are not always prevalent on a package label – they must be derived from several pieces of information. For example, attributes like plant-based or Ketogenic require some interpretation beyond the label to identify the combination of nutritional and ingredient attributes. This adds additional complexity for brands and retailers in terms of highlighting their product content to shoppers.

It is well worth the effort, however. Consumers today actively seek such information, and there is an opportunity for both retailers and brand marketers to drive better engagement and conversion. Given that consumers want that deep level of data and can search online, it’s important for brands and retailers to ensure they are highlighting these features for their eCommerce programs. It also makes sense to call attention to these items at the shelf. For example:

Retailers

 • Can analyze their assortment to see which products they have that meet popular wellness identifiers and group or promote accordingly, such as gluten-free, Paleo-friendly or other foods that meet certain diet program requirements (e.g. WW, Atkins, etc.).
 • Can use assortment analysis to create shelf groupings (or shelf labels) to highlight specific products that communicate their diet-friendliness in convenient ways.
 • Can take trending wellness searches and create meal solution categories or cross-merchandising opportunities.

Brands

 • Can consider their current product mix to see which of their items can qualify for wellness categories and promote as such online.
 • Can use this product analysis in category management discussions with retailer partners as a way to promote a family of products to meet a wellness need.
 • Can create differentiated packaging claims or enhanced content to support any derived wellness attributes.

By performing more detailed wellness analysis on product contents and overall item assortment, both brands and retailers can help to drive better engagement with today’s shoppers. Retailers should consider the types of wellness categories their product assortment falls into, and brands can analyze their current mix to find gaps or promote product combinations for wellness-friendly diets.
